Wal-Mart Joins Hand with JNJ to Enlarge Plastic Film Recycling

Recently, Wal-Mart Canada joins hand with Johnson and Johnson together with Canadian plastic industry association to promote recycling program facing the consumers. The recycling program does not only aim at shopping plastic bags, but also including other forms of plastic bags and plastic films.

Wal-mart Canada franchise has always recycling shopping plastic bags, and now they are planning to enlarge the recycling variety further.

JNJ takes part in this program, and is now in the stage of trying. As is known to us all, JNJ in the manufacturer of Ziploc brand plastic bag.


Retailer, manufacturer and trade groups will officially public this program in August.

Fundamentally speaking, we recycle films or plastic bags of all kinds, says the Canadian plastic industry association sustainable development vice president Krista Friesen, we are very exciting, because this is the first time that plastic recycling program tripartite cooperation. Besides, this is related to Canadian domestic public construction, providing recycling approach to all citizens and this is very good.

In the future months, Canadian plastic industry association will audit the recycling program, deciding what kind of plastic can be put in the recycling bin. The association will provide storage support after the program carries out.

Formerly, recycling bins highlights the functions of shopping bags, now the recycling bin reminds people that various plastic bags and films are recyclable, including bread bag, dry clean bag, newspaper bag, food package, commodity package, and box package film.

Of course, Ziplock zipper bag and other food storage is also recyclable.

But one key point of this program is that recycled material must be clean and dry.

If the collected material is clean, recyclers would accept. From our point of view, we hope to improve Canadian material recycling rate. Says Friesen.

We will try our best to put more clean material into recycling network. Our standpoint is out of these materials’ high value, the public also hope to deal with these materials properly, and we just hope to provide such infrastructure.

Proper Waste Plastic Recycling Management Can Save Four Billion Every Year

Plastic waste severely pollutes the natural environment, sea turtles will get disease or even die when swallow the plastic waste; plastic waste might also entangle dolphins and whales, damage their habitat. In addition, plastic waste may also produce chemical pollution, plastic scrap will lead to invasion of alien species, and damage much national tourism and fishing such as pollutes the beach and destroys the fishing gear.

The UN Environment Program 2014 Yearbook gives special attention to micro plastic, that is plastic granules whose diameter is less than five mm produced during manufacturing. Micro plastic is very easy to be swallowed by marine organism by mistake. These wastes are difficult to be filtered during sewage disposal, and will directly be discharged into rivers, lakes and oceans. Groups of marine organism have been found gathered around micro plastic in many areas in North Atlantic Ocean. These micro plastic can spread harmful microbe, causative agent, algae and other species.



Plastic Disclosure Program supervisor Andrew Russell emphasizes that companies and enterprises need to take plastic footprint into consideration just as they consider carbon footprint, water footprint and forest footprint.
